Secret in the Tangerine: 88 endgame compositions

The endgame half of 橘中秘 (Secret in the Tangerine), the Ming-dynasty manual compiled by Zhu Jinzhen and printed in 1632. The edition dpxq.com records numbers 103 endgame positions; 88 of them are here, each rooted at its own diagram with the book's line as the mainline, and numbered as the edition numbers them. Most are material studies and their names say what is on the board (a chariot against the full defence, cannon and soldier against two advisors); the full defence is the two advisors and two elephants. The few named techniques are rendered by sense, and the Chinese name is kept alongside. Some draws are answered by a single holding move, so a chapter can be a diagram and one move. Several wins end in stalemate, which xiangqi scores as a loss for the side that cannot move, and a few positions have Black to move first. Records come from dpxq.com and are credited on each composition. Every line replays legally through the Mistboard rules kernel, which is a check on the record and not on the book: this text has a single source, and a solution recorded short would still replay cleanly. The compositions are nearly four centuries old and long out of copyright.
