How he plays

He is hardest to beat with red. Since July 2025 he has lost two of his twenty-one red games, both on one day of an open qualifier in Shanghai.

He has no single opening. His 25 red games here start four different ways, with the central cannon, the Palcorner Cannon, a horse or a soldier, and each of them comes up at least five times.

He plays the long game. Talking to Sportsoho in 2023, he said that neither he nor his senior Wong Hok Him is the kind of player who goes for the kill from the opening; both like to draw a game out and keep the threat hidden, a needle in the cotton. His longest win here ran 81 moves.

Asian Individual Championship, Manila

He is in Manila this week for the 21st Asian Individual Championship, which runs to 8 October. His games there will be added to this page when it ends.

China league qualifier, Hangzhou

Teams outside China's top league play a qualifier to get in. Hong Kong sent a team to Hangzhou from 17 to 19 August, and Fung played all five rounds. He won four and drew the other, on the first day. Zhejiang Mintai and Cao Yanlei's Shanghai Jiahong went through.
